Introduction

Kubecost and Port have officially announced a technology integration partnership. This brings together Kubecost’s cost monitoring capabilities with Port’s internal developer portal, providing users with deeper insights into their Kubernetes spending and deployments as well as alerts and the ability to track compliance using scorecards.

Who are Kubecost and Port?

By providing granular insights into resource utilization, Kubecost empowers teams to optimize their Kubernetes spending effectively. Kubecost’s comprehensive interface and analytics have made it a go-to solution for businesses seeking to control costs without compromising performance. Kubecost is built on OpenCost, an open-source Kubernetes cost visibility solution that is managed by and part of the CNCF. OpenCost is now also integrated with Port!

Port, on the other hand, is a platform for building no-code, holistic, Internal Developer Portals which improve developer experience and productivity. Port consolidates everything developers need to know and execute to deliver software more productively and to comply with organizational standards. Port’s Kubernetes plugin automatically collects live data from the existing Kubernetes infrastructure to enrich Port’s Software Catalog. It enables live synchronization of different Kubernetes resources (such as Namespaces, Deployments, and any other resource supported by the Kubernetes API) into the software catalog, from pods and ReplicaSets to ArgoCD projects. The software catalog metadata can then be enriched with FinOps information from Kubecost, enabling users to get full visibility into cost information, beyond raw resource cost data.

Unlocking New Possibilities: Cost Data Integration

With the integration of Kubecost into Port, users can now gain access and visibility to cost data in the internal developer portal (that can be filtered and grouped according to the user’s requirements) directly within their deployment workflows. This integration eliminates the need for context switching between tools, enabling teams to make informed decisions about resource allocation and deployment strategies in real time. In addition, with Port, you can embed or create customized dashboards, enabling tailored views of the cost data that matters most to teams.

Empowering Insights: Kubecost Predict

One of the most exciting features of this partnership is the incorporation of Kubecost Predict into the Port ecosystem. Kubecost Predict shows the cost of Kubernetes workloads based on anticipated resource demands. By providing insights into future spending, teams can proactively optimize their infrastructure to avoid budget overruns and maximize ROI.

For example, consider a developer needs to spin up a test environment for a new feature. With Kubecost Predict integrated into a self-service action in Port, the developer can now receive an immediate cost for running this environment based on the required resources and duration. This means that before even initializing the environment, the developer can assess the anticipated cost and make informed decisions on how long the environment should remain active to balance testing needs with cost considerations. This is just one of many use cases where this partnership can be leveraged.

Kubecost + Port = Better Together for Users Globally

As organizations continue to embrace Kubernetes for their container orchestration needs, the importance of cost optimization cannot be overstated. The collaboration between Kubecost and Port represents a significant step forward in addressing this critical challenge. By democratizing access to cost data and empowering users with predictive insights, this partnership creates new ways for developers to understand and view their Kubernetes deployment costs.
